2There’s been a lot of debate about this song and Best Coast’s new album of the same name. Some have said that it’s a fun surf-pop album tailored for summer while others claim that Best Coast doesn’t even try to create sophisticated lyrics and music, instead basing a career on a gimicky love of SoCal. Personally, I think that once you’ve heard one Best Coast song you’ve heard them all, and yes, Bethany Cosentino is not Leonard Cohen, but that doesn’t make her music bad. I think the 21st century thus far has taught us that art can be whatever the fuck you want it to be, and if a band wants to create their image and music around a romanticized image of LA, who are you to discredit them? Paper Bird, a local CO band, defines themselves on complex musicianship, but it’s the basic jingle of “Colorado” that gets the loudest cheers at shows. Music is music is music. And that can mean whatever you want it to.
